Hepatitis-B restriction for work visa

Hi! So I have this job offer to work in Japan as an engineer and unfortunately for me, I am afflicted with Hepatitis-B. The local agency contracted by my Japanese employer emailed me today and said that given my medical result they would no longer process my application. I found it weird because I was able to work in Japan twice in between 2016-2019 as an intracompany transferee to the global headquarters with my previous employer. I was even issued with a residence card in my 2nd time. I was only required to get clearance from my doctor both times. Was there any change in regulation since 2019?

I tried searching but I haven’t found any answer even in the COE and Visa section of the Japan Embassy website. Hoping anyone knows. TIA!

  1. Did they specifically say they weren’t going to do it because of immigration restrictions?

Because you’re correct in that there’s no government policy forbidding people with HepB from entering.

What is far more likely is that someone at the company saw your medical results and decided they no longer wished to employ you.

  2. Ooof that sucks. Can’t offer any advice but I hope you get this resolved!

  3. It could be that

A: Japan has rules regarding not letting people with Hep B reactive in

B: Some countries do, Japan doesn’t, but your agency is mixing this up

C: Your agency has enough other people to work on that they don’t want to “waste” time on anyone/anything unusual

  4. Can’t you phone Japan Embassy in your home country? I always phone to them to ask questions.
