New Years Eve in Tokyo ideas

This is my first NYE since moving to Japan and the original plan was to ring it in in Shibuya. Of course, after shinkansen tickets are already booked, I hear that celebrations there are canceled…

Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do instead?

  1. Halloween was also “cancelled” in Shibuya but that didn’t stop all the ppl from going there..

  2. I’ve been clubbing in 六本木 on NYE a lifetime ago. If that’s your thing, it’s one way to go.

Something to consider is seeing the first sunrise. I’ve seen it from Tokyo Tower and it was beautiful, although waiting in line was horrible.

Just FYI, it’s possible to cancel your train tickets. JR charges only like 500 yen if you do that.

  3. When they say it’s “cancelled”, they can’t close the shops or stop people from actually going there. It just means there will be no official countdown at the Square. I was there last year even (they had guys out with signs saying there was no countdown but that didn’t stop everyone from coming out). You can just find a bar or something and cheer there.

An alternative is Yokohama, which apparently never stopped its fireworks display.
