Working in a US based Japanese Company!

Hello r/japanlife,

First of all, Happy new year to everyone. I have a question. I have started working for a US based Japanese company. The owner is Japanese, but the company is registered in the US, not in Japan. At the moment, I am thinking about accepting the offer but I believe I have to pay my insurance, tax and pension by myself from my salary. Also, I might get an international insurance from my office but still I guess I need Japanese national insurance for my convenience. I want to keep my records clean in Japan for visa renewal.

Any advice? Is there anything I need to keep in mind?

  1. There is no remote work visa. If it is not registered in Japan it isn’t a Japanese company and as far as immigration is concerned you are not working in Japan. What this means is technically you would be violating your status of residence unless you are on a spouse/PR status of residence. You also will not be able to renew your current status of residence.

You will need to continue to pay into the pension/healthcare system as long as you are a resident of Japan regardless.

To stay legal what you need to do is find an outsourcing company who can hire you then they contract with the original US company.
