How to approach Shirakawago + Gokayama this February?

Hi folks! I’m planning a solo trip to Japan for February and really excited to be able to visit Shirakawago and Gokayama for the first time. I’d appreciate from advice on how to approach it from folks who have been before!

I have three days buffered in my schedule right now so I can go slow or abbreviate and do other things sooner. I’ve been to Japan many times before and can speak relatively capably (N2+).

In general, I’m thinking of either 1) using Takayama as a base and doing day-trips back and forth or 2) staying in a gassho-zukuri in Ainokura or some combination of the two.

* For folks who have been before, what would you recommend between the options? How much time would you spend?
* I found a single day tour on [Viator](https://www.viator.com/tours/Takayama/Shirakawago-World-Heritage-Private-Full-day-Tour-Chartered-Car-from-Takayama/d25943-92136P51) that picks up from Takayama and can go to the villages. I like the convenience of transportation but it is a bit pricy. Would it be worthwhile to go on a tour to fully appreciate the villages?
* Any other options or attractions of interest to consider in the area?

Thanks in advance!
