Seasonal vegetables/fruits

Hi

I will move to tokyo in April as a PhD student. Since I am on a budget, I am looking up cheap grocery options all the time (hehe). I am a vegetarian, but eating mainly vegan. So, vegetables and fruits are essential, and as it seems, very expensive. In blogs, they always recommend to buy in season to save some money. However, I am moving from europe to japan, I don’t have a clue on seasonal vegetables/fruits. Don’t even get me started on how I don’t know traditional japanese vegetables…

Can anyone help me or provide a table with some vegetables and their season?

Thanks!!!

  1. The grocery store will inform you about what is in season— it’s almost impossible to avoid the seasonal aspect!

If your goal is cheap vegetables and fruits, then look for the cheaper grocery stores first of all (there will be fancier ones and cheaper ones). There are also the “everyday vegetables,” which tend to be cheap: cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, green peppers, daikon, potatoes, etc… just google いつもの野菜 and you’ll see examples.

If you can read Japanese just check out some cookbooks from your library or look up recipes online.

  2. Eat veg like normal, buy what is cheap and make it work. Pack spices and stuff that you like from home and bring them with you.

Fruit(besides banana) should now be treated as a dessert.
