On Dec 31, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) announced that 92 people who arrived at the airport from abroad were confirmed to be infected with the new COVID variants in quarantine. Of these, 90 had a history of stay in China. Most days since mid-October, fewer than 10 people had been found to be infected in airport quarantine, but there was a sharp increase at the end of the year.
According to the Ministry, 90 people who had stayed in China arrived at Narita, Chubu and Kansai airports on 30 October. Of these, 77 were asymptomatic.
