Happy New Year!

Japan does not celebrate the new year with as much joy as Christmas. How did you welcome the new year here in Japan?

  1. The same as every year. With a champagne toast at midnight as the dogs watch us get drunk finishing off the bottle.

  2. I seem to always end up at the hub ordering drinks for foreigners that can’t speak Japanese. It’s always a great way to meet new people.

  3. Happy New Year!

I just came back from Germany and did not have the energy for anything more than jumping into the bathtub and then going to bed… The latter of which I’m going to do now.

  4. Happy New Year! I usually just stay at home with cookies from a cookie shop, cheetoes, or mcdonalds. Today, it was all three of them, while I watched the countdown on TV. I could’ve watched it with my friends, but they all went home to spend time with their families.

  5. Usually play a silly dnd one shot that involves copious amounts of alcohol. This year all my friends are in America this year. So me and the family played Disney monopoly instead.

  6. Oops, are we already there? I was just watching a “Diesel Creek” video on YouTube and forgot all about New Year. Priorities…

    Well, happy 2023, then!

  7. Waited for the fireworks to go off on Animal Crossing, then me and dorm mates went to the local shrine for hatsumode. Cool experience as I didn’t expect the amount of people present, and tried amazake for the first time, was nice

  8. Happy new year everyone! This year I sat at home contemplating the future. I drank some ume shu and waited for messages that never came. I considered sending some myself but got the new iPhone and since it doesn’t have a home button need to restart it to exit the app I open. So decided it wasn’t worth opening Line.

I then realized my phone was in airplane mode. I turned it off, then received a flood of messages from all my distant acquaintances that I consider close friends. I began to cry tears of joy.

I then realized my phone had been in airplane mode for the last month. And apparently I was supposed to go into work, and all of December is not a holiday in Japan? It’s okay though, my boss is cool.

Next I searched YouTube for videos for “2022 a year in review” and remembered everything that happened. ‘Twas a fun rabbit hole. Falalalalalalalala.

  9. Happy New year!

I watched Kouhaku, went to my local shrine and now I watched CDTV. But since my favourite group is done with their performances I go to sleep now

  10. I looked up a list of recommended things to do for New Year’s Eve/Day and I actually laughed because the list was so short and so dull. New Year’s is just so boring here. I did hatsumode once years ago and while it was interesting, once was more than enough. In the end we went out for a casual dinner then waited for midnight with the dogs, same as usual.

  11. Happy new year, spending it in the gym, so I guess I’m starting alright on that new year resolution
