When do I need to apply for nenkin after arrival?

Arrived on spouse visa 3 weeks ago, no income.

Registered/notified address and enrolled in NHI, missed out on nenkin (didn’t know at the time)

I have to wait for a mail in order to obtain my number card which they said it would takes 3-4 weeks.

Now, in nenkin application form there is a my number section which I believe I don’t have it yet?

Do I have to wait for my number? Is there a time limit like within two weeks of arrival?

Extra question: When do I need start paying for NHI? Is it starting this month or next month?

Thanks in advance!

  1. You can get your ‘my number’ printed on a jyuminhyo from the city/ward office. Anyway I don’t think you need it so just go to the office and ask. You can apply for an exemption from payment of nenkin while you’re there if you want to since you have no income.

You’ll probably get a bill for both this month and next month’s NHI in the post soon.

  2. What’s your reason for having no income?

I ask Because you’re on a spouse visa I am going to assume someone in your household *should* have some income (otherwise you may not have got the spouse visa unless your household have a financial guarantor).

So on the off chance you’re truly unemployed (and not earning income from an employer overseas as many users here seem to believe means they have “no Japanese income”… which is obviously incorrect) then if say your spouse is enrolled in Shakai Hoken and you intend to earn less than ¥1.3 million a tax year then you can get your health insurance and national pension paid for via their employer as a category 3 insured dependent spouse.
