What japanese dialect is the most different from the standard japanese language?

Hello, I made a similar-ish post a while ago. I’m really interested in the different dialects and how they affect a person’s accent. With that said, is there a dialect that’s really different from the standard japanese? Someone replied in my post a while ago and gave me a map about the areas that end their sentences/words with “yo” jo” “de” etc..

I heard kyoto accents tend to be much thicker than most, although, I do know that older people do tend to have a thicker accent do it being more used no matter the area they come from.

Is it just the way they use “yo” jo” “de” etc the thing that makes them different, along with some dialects using more of a slang/casual language when talking in general, with others using more formal language?
Thank you

  1. I’m not entirely sure but isn’t the Osaka accent usually the most commonly used as an example of an extremely distinct accent?

  2. There are various dialect in Japan
Kansai-ben is the most famous one.
It’s easy to understand Kansai-ben for people who live in other area.

I think the most different from the standard japanese is dialect which used in Tohoku or Kyushu area.

Below is interesting promotional video of Kobayashi city.

  3. I’d think either Okinawa or Tsugaru dialects. Tsugaru dialect is like the staple of my Japanese friends when giving examples of Japanese they’d have no hope in understanding.

  4. Tsugaru in western Aomori. Specifically the Fujisaki, Itayanagi, Tsuruta corridor between Hirosaki and Aomori City. It is nearly its own language amongst the elderly there. Most children can understand some from listening to their grandparents, but it’s barely intelligible even in surrounding areas like Eastern Aomori and Northern Akita.

    Here is non-exhaustive lexicon…

  5. My mother in law is full on Tsugaru ben (kuroishi near hirosaki). Having a conversation with her is me hanging on for dear life despite being fluent in Japanese. Kansai ben was so much easier…

  6. Def Tsugaru dialect. Its sometimes broadcasted on TV, and none of us standard Japanese speakers are able to understand them without Japanese subtitles. It’s a whole new language.
