How to take money?

In retrospect this may sound odd but I don’t understand how to take money from my home country to Japan.
Do I just put it in my bag?
Who do I disclose to that I have money?
What is the limit?

I am asking since I’ll be going to work in Japan in the summer, and it’s my first time ever going overseas. Salary is paid at the end of 2nd working month, meaning I’ll need from 5 to 7 hundred thousand yen at least and upwards, to survive until payday.

  1. Is there a reason you can’t withdraw money from ATMs in Japan? Consider signing up with a bank in your country that doesn’t charge fees for international withdrawals and just withdraw cash in yen once you’re here from ATMs that allow international transactions (like 7-11 or JP bank).

Bring some yen with you to last you the first day or so, but then just withdraw cash from ATMs as normal until you get a Japanese bank account set up and are receiving your salary.

ETA: you can also set up a transfer wise account and transfer to your new Japanese account after you open it, if you’re transferring large sums.

  2. Withdrawing money from ATMs is the best option, but you can bring cash too. You can bring up to 1 million yen without having to declare it at customs. Definitely don’t put it in your checked luggage, keep it on your person at all times.

  3. I use the 7-11 ATM + my Wells Fargo debit card to withdraw USD into yen. Costs 110 yen per withdrawl. you can get 100k yen at a time.
