On 1 January, the Joint Staff Office of the Ministry of Defence of Japan announced that a Chinese WZ7 reconnaissance drone passed between Okinawa Island and Miyako Island, and then flew back and forth between the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean from morning to afternoon on the same day. This is the first confirmed flight of this aircraft type and the Ministry of Defence is analysing its purpose.

    According to the Ministry of Defence, after entering the Pacific Ocean, the WZ7 continued southwest, reversed and returned to the East China Sea along the same route. Japanese Air Self-Defence Force fighter jets responded with an emergency launch (scramble).
