Sending money from US to Japan with (Transfer)Wise?

So my friend is trying to send money from their US bank account to their Japanese one. Even though we have done the opposite a million times, we are both a little stumped with it being the other way around, haha.

To do JP —> US, we do a bank transfer and send it to the Wise bank account, and they transfer it to our US account.

To do US —> JP, it’s the same thing, right? Is the Wise account the same information?

For some reason this is confusing us more than necessary, and there’s nothing on the Wise account that’s specifically for US to Japan. Any help would be appreciated, and please don’t call us idiots, haha. 😅

  1. Transferring to a Japanese account from a US one isn’t too bad; you need your bank’s name, branch number, and the account number. All can be found on the cash card. Had to do it after a transfer bounced due to a wrong account number

  2. Can they not use their American card to do a withdrawal here? That seems like the most straightforward way.

  3. If you’re having trouble go through the process with your JTE, preferably at the bank.

  4. I have sent money from my Japan Post bank account to Wise twice so far. First and foremost, you’ll need a My Number Card to verify your identity before you can make any transfers. As far as I’m aware there’s no other form of ID for foreigners that they’ll accept (your Residence Card won’t cut it).

To begin, go to the Wise app and go to your JPY account. Click the “Add” button, then type in how many yen you want to send. Under “You’ll pay”, select Japanese Yen.

Click “Continue”, and you’ll be prompted to verify your identity if you haven’t done so already. Once that’s sorted, select the option to send from a Japanese bank account. You should then see instructions on how to make the transfer, with details on Wise’s Japanese bank account. You can go to an ATM and make the transfer, and it should go through within about 20 minutes.

When the yen shows up in your Wise account, you can convert it to USD, then pay it out to your US bank account.

  5. Open a USD account in Wise and add the money from your US bank account to your Wise USD account balance. Convert the money from your Wise USD account to your Wise JPY account and then send it your Japanese bank account.
