Japanese people returning to Japan?

I know everyone is a case-by-case situation but I’ve seen a good number of Japanese who praise western countries like some sort of better alternative to Japan and go live abroad but more than half of them end up coming back to Japan after 1-4 years. Why does this happen so often? Is it because they don’t have the same convenience and safety they have in Japan?

  1. It happens with foreigners going to Japan as well. Most ALTs only seem to last 1-3 years. Moving to a foreign country is hard.

  2. This isn’t true for just Japanese people, it’s true for most people who live overseas. Those of us who stay long term are a small minority.

  3. As lot has to do with visa issues I believe. Most returnees I know here in Japan wanted to stay overseas but their visa ran out.

  4. I can imagine, quality of life in Japan is just so high, very hard to beat. If I would ever go overseas, I will come back within 2-3 years as well.

I guess its a mix of different factors, but for me safety and stability are key reasons I will come back.

  5. I’m a Japanese person living in an EU country. Recently I visited Japan after almost 5 years and honestly it made me think about going back to Japan. Compared to the country I’m currently living in, there are so many interesting things to experience in Japan.

After living abroad for a while I can see more good things in Japan. But I know that I felt that way because I was there just as a tourist. I would not appreciate living in Japan if I was actually living there. I’m done with the toxic working culture.

  6. I think it’s the same with anyone who moves to another country. Outwardly you’re impressed with all the things you won’t find in your home country, but there’s always part of you that wants to go back to your comfort zone.
There’s also the practical matter of the effort required for tying up loose ends in your home country and applying for PR in another

  7. The shine fades off quickly, especially if you started living in a developing country like China or Indonesia or India.
