Living with the parents of a friend while studying – Any bureaucratic problems?

Hello everyone,

I’ll be doing a university exhange for 5 months to Tokyo this year and I was thinking of asking my friend’s parents whether I could live with them during that time. We get along really well and since I’ve stayed with them for about a week some years ago, we already know each other.

They live in a mansion and have a few spare bedrooms.

I don’t want to give them any trouble with bureaucratic things. I know that I need to register a residence address and a juminhyo. I read in some posts at r/japanlife that you can register this juminhyo separately or as a member of a group but oif it’s registered separately, it could count as subletting. Since they wouldn’t officially sublet me a room and I would just pay them an estimated “living fee” for food, water, electricity etc. that they use extra because of me, I don’t want them to have to file for any extra income or something like that. Do we need to be careful with anything when I register my residency there?

Thanks in advance for any helpful answers. 🙂
