Was I pressed for bringing a used plastic bag to the 7/11

I’ve got a load of 7/11 bags at home so I took one to do my shopping, it was empty at this point and I was holding it like you would if you had something in it.

Some guy started saying something which included the word baggu but he sounded like “why are you bringing a bag here” His tone sounded a bit weirded out and how dare I bring a bag.

He said it again the same way when I was at the cashier and later said “ecological” thumbs up

and then said “oh rich man” when I took my bills out of my pocket to pay.

Am I wrong in thinking that he’s making fun of me looking poor or something?

  1. I think you got pressed to learn Japanese language. Hard to tell what anyone is saying around you if you don’t understand the language and you try to decrypt all through some keywords

  2. At first, when I gave them my bag, they would refuse to fill it for me so I just told them to do it. No way I’m going to be expected to handle the autopay machine, get my change and then fill my own bag while the dude stands there watching me. Lazy mfkers.

  3. I will never understand why gaijin are so obsessed with everyone around them. I have a friend like this too. Always watching everyone in case someone is looking at him, always listening trying to overhear something that sounds like an insult to him.

Seriously why do you care so very deeply about how strangers perceive you? Why not get some confidence, some self belief and just live your own life?

  4. You didn’t even understand what he said, why get offended?

He probably just wanted to start a conversation, found out your Japanese sucked and then tried to end it awkwardly

  5. Why do you care so much about a random dude that you spent only few minutes of your life with? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)

  6. Honestly, if you are evaluating your status in life based on the way random folks at the conbini talk to you then you’re going to want to stop that asap. If I earn points on a transaction and have a lot of those points saved up I get “oh rich man”. If I pay my health insurance and the amount is more than 5K for the monthly bill I get “oh rich man”. I laugh it off in either case and try to have a pleasant exchange.

One note to keep in mind – by bringing in a conbini bag and depending on how exactly you were wielding it they may have wondered if its contents (if anything) were bought at another conbini, and might have been expressing concern. You might be ahead of your time on bringing in used conbini bags, most others use more recognizable recycling bags.

Best advice though – learn how to speak Japanese.

  7. Someone said something. Are you talking to me? I let you know I was big in the navy seal and had 100% kill rate …

“I said do you need my extra baggu?”
