What do you think of the Teach Now certification program?

I have been researching the Teach Now teaching certification program and am wondering what everyone thinks about it?

What are some pros and cons to the program? I would like to ideally teach at international schools eventually.

Would it be better to do a traditional program instead versus the Teach Now program which is online?

  1. Cons. its a teach now program

Pros. You can get a teaching license and be a qualified teacher

  2. Cons- it’s not good enough to get you into an international school in Japan.

Pros- you might be able to get into an international school in south east Asia or more rural parts of China with it.

It would absolutely be better to do a traditional programme plus a minimum of 2 years domestic experience if you want teaching to be your career and eventually work in a desirable location and a decent school.

  3. I’m not aware of anyone teaching in Japan who has done it but I know a few people teaching at international schools in Seoul, SK who have done it. But they also have teaching experience in their home country.

  4. I’m doing it now and actually really enjoying it. It’s easily the best online learning program I’ve ever done in any context.

If your goal is to get a US teacher’s certification, it seems to work just fine. You’ll need that combined with experience and a relevant degree to teach in international schools.

In any case it will make you more hireable than 90% of the people applying to be teachers in Japan. Since corona, that might actually mean something as jobs are a bit scarce atm.

  5. I’ve done research on this course and asked questions about it myself. There’s a lot of negativity from people on this particular thread but these are probably from people who haven’t taken the course or are hung up about where you get a qualification instead of the qualification itself.

The consensus that I’ve got is summed up broadly by u/Justinisdriven on this thread. It seems like it’s a good way to get your foot in the door though you’ll likely need a couple years experience to get into prestigious International Schools. There’s no harm in wanting to do some self development and it’s great that you’re considering your options.

  6. i sub for a lot of teachers in the USA school system. I Feel there are two types, those that are jaded, older, and got their license through a career switch program. Then there are people that got some form of an education degree and are left alone do do their own thing.

The career switch people i honestly feel are treated worse than even the art and music teachers. Like they will co teach 2 classes and run duties the rest of the day. I just dont get that as an education degree doesn’t even teach you that much 🙂
