Reinforced tax-free checks?

Hello everyone!

I’ve been doing quite some tax-free shopping.
I remember that a few years ago nobody cared about seeing the goods and verifying your opened purchases.
But shops have recently upgraded their system, so instead of gluing all the receipts into your passport, they would scan your passport and your purchases are saved on a database. I saw in one shop where they scanned my passport that all my purchases showed up.

Now I am kinda scared that I would have to go through the verification process at the airport. Has anyone recently left Tokyo without having to go to through the purchases checking process?

Thank you in advance for all kinds of advice.

  1. I do not know it they could see the purchase history, but I can tell you that in 2019, they did scan my passport when I did tax free shopping.

And why are you scared? Are you consuming consumables or leaving items in Japan ?

If you want an advice, just do not break the rules and you won’t have any problem if they decide to check your purchases.
