Itinerary Check – 17 day – Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka

Hi,

Planning to do a trip with a couple of friends at the end of January. Quite flexible on the things to do if within the city.

Jan 21 – Arrive at Tokyo NRT, Get cash from ATM, pick up wifi, JR Pass?, book Sunrise Sleeper Train, do somethings around the area at night

Jan 22 – Shinjuku City area

Jan 23 – Shibuya City area, Setagaya City area, Fish Market, Yokohama?

Jan 24 – Tokyo to Kusastu Onsen

Jan 25 – Kusatsu Onsen to Tokyo, Sleeper train to Himeji (if there is space)

Jan 26 – Himeji (from sleeper train), Himeji to Kyoto, Shrine

Jan 27 – Kyoto, Shrine, Bamboo Forest, Thousand Gates

Jan 28 – Kyoto to Osaka, Onsen, Mall, Aquarium,

Jan 29 – Osaka

Jan 30 – Osaka

Jan 31 – Osaka to Kyosan Temple Stay

Feb 1 – Kyosan to Kyoto, Bean festival, Nishiki Market

Feb 2 – Kyoto

Feb 3 – Nara, Nara lantern festival (didn’t want to miss this), sleeper train to Toyko

Feb 4 – Toyko

Feb 5 – Toyko to NRT

Overall:

* Tokyo – 4-5 days
* Kusatsu Onsen – 1 day
* Kyoto – 4-5 days (can be combined with Osaka)
* Osaka – 3 days (can be combined with Kyoto)
* Kyosan – 1 day

My dates are a little awkward for the 7-day JR Pass and just under breaking even in the 14-day version. Does the JR Pass make it easier to travel around to justify getting the Pass?

Additional thoughts and recommendations?

Thanks,

  1. You can buy the sunrise express tickets online now from JR west. [https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/route_search/](https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/route_search/) On their site there is still availability for the nobi nobi seats and the cheapest private rooms on the 25th. It looks like neither JR pass is worth it for you but if you do get one get it from the official site, which will let you reserve the nobi nobi seats online.
