  1. Can you give us names for these things please? what is the item on the white plate in the top left? what is the black in the middle? beans? what is bottom left on the black plate? what is top right on the black plate? what is pink right middle on the black plate?

    What is the brown on the white and blue plate?

    boiled mochi & redbean paste

    there was also kinako (roasted soybean) powder for the mochi on the table but i left it out by accident…also left out the bowl of clear soup served during New Year’s… : (

    on the tray, starting from the top right going down:

    stewed kintokimame (red kidney beans)

    sliced kamaboko (fishcake – typically the red and white varieties are served during New Year’s)

    mashed satsumaimo (sweet potato) and kurumi (chestnut)

    a triangle of stewed kabocha (Japanese pumpkin)

    stewed kuromame (black soybeans)

    quick-fried kurumi (walnuts)

    black sesame tofu with sweet miso dressing

    kobumaki (rolled kelp with cooked salted salmon in the center)

    namasu (vinegared shredded daikon radish and carrot – red & white are key colors!)
