Do Japanese contain a lot of English words?

I am watching Detective Conan and I hear some English words being used and I am wondering if they are the words that are used in daily life by Japanese people or are used only in specific context. I am learning Japanese but I didn’t stumble across any English words yet (though I am at the beginning).

For example I heard “butter knife”, do really Japanese people say that?

  1. Yeah, the Japanese language has historically been under a lot of influenced from English and Dutch. To this day they use tons of foreign words like :

    テレビ terebi (TV)

    キチン kichin (kitchen)

    パソコン pasocon (personal computer)

    バッターナイフ battaa naifu (butter knife)

They can easily be recognised due to they use of カタカナ, which are much more angular than ひらがな
(But bear in mind that sometimes カタカナ are used for Japanese words, especially for animal names)

  2. So many, the closer your speaking partner is to high school the more you’ll see essentially, but even basically everyone except maybe very old people use them.
