How is Tokyo’s Suginami-ku, Mitaka-shi, or Chofu-shi?

Our family’s original plan was to move from Osaka to Tokyo early 2024 (for our child’s kindergarten/yochien to finish first and to enter Tokyo’s primary school afterwards). But plans changed, and both myself and wife (Japanese) decided to move anytime soon (stop current kindergarten, and join mid-term in Tokyo).

Although our main reason for the move is due to my job, but of course family is top priority so family-friendly environment is our aim (sorry if it sounds too broad). After reading/asking information around and some considerations, we somehow came down to Suginami-ku, Mitaka-shi, and Chofu-shi.

May we kindly ask what you have in mind for those 3 areas? Positive, negative, anything is really appreciated.

  1. You may also want to try asking in /r/Tokyo.

  2. They’re all perfectly liveable. I would perhaps choose Choufu because its corporate tax base seems to be strong, which led to somewhat nicer public facilities than some other places have.

  3. In my incredibly biased opinion, I think that this part of Western Tokyo along the Chuo Line is the best place to live in the entire country.

  4. I live in Suginami-ku right now, it’s a perfect place for families.

I recommend the area alongside the Inokashira line (Kugayama, Takaido, Hamadayama, Eifukucho).

Been living in several others 区(Shinjuku, Meguro, Minato) I can say Suginami is the most family friendly one (a lot of parks, good subsidies, a lot of family friendly restaurants).

  5. I know a little bit about Mitaka City. It’s a nice place. Quiet residential area with many parks. It is easy to get to cities like Kichijoji and big cities like Shibuya. I guess it is a relatively high income area.

  6. Go visit each. Check the stations and schools etc. Don’t ask Reddit go and decide for yourself.

  7. … Where is your job… Because if it’s on the Eastern side of Tokyo, and you have to ride the Chuo or the Odakyu every morning, it will soon get old, fast, whatever the priority you give to the family.
