Happy New Rabbit Year!
I have a friend who is considering using a 退職代行サービス(not sure how to translate it but it’s a service that takes the pain out of quitting a job, making a clean break) which is something I had not ever heard of until today. Has anyone here used this before and is it necessary? Lawyers are more expensive but probably more thorough and less chance of getting scammed by the professional scammers out there!

No, it sounds completely redundant.
Give the fair notice, and leave. If they are going to scam you, only a lawyer would help. I doubt the taishokudaikou would do anything about it.

What’s the point of using it, unless it’s a very legally questionable job?
In Japan it’s usually a straightforward process: you talk to your boss, write 退職届 and you’re good to go. The rest is done by the company and usually there’s nothing to hire a lawyer for.
How do people come up with these business ideas? And how do they actually end up being profitable? I’m completely impressed that the entire premise of “we’ll quit your job for you” could actually make any money.
One of the times where someone needs to just man up and do it.
