How to use a textbook?

So recently i bought a japanese textbook that comes with the 100 most used ideograms notebook. But the thing is i don’t know how to start. I tried it but i just couldn’t understand how to use it. For example, i decided to use it in the order the chapters were presented, then it would teach me a word with an kanji with it, so that means i had to memorize that kanji? If i don’t need to follow the chapter order then how should i study? Same goes with the ideogram book, should i learn some everyday? Or learn the kanjis that were presented in a chapter? Should i learn vocabulary first? I’m completely lost and i feel like this would count to every textbook since it’s my first time using one. At this point i just want someone else to teach me a method on how to do it since i can’t think of a good one. What should i do?

  1. I’m not familiar with that textbook but you have to basically figure each one out on your own. Kinda like if you get a new video game (not sure if you are gamer), when you first get it you are like “what” but then if you look at it for a bit you are like “ok I get what they want me to do with this”

Skim the book and look at what each chapter presents, and come up with a strategy as to how you are gonna tackle it.

Usually if there is vocab, Anki is gonna be your main tool.

Doing vocab as the first thing to a chapter seems like a good idea already.

  2. Could you share which textbook you’re using? If it’s a common one maybe someone can give you better information.

You should also see if there’s a foreword/introduction at the very beginning of the book. Genki has an incredibly in-depth “how to use this book” before chapter one so maybe whatever you’re using has one too.
