I try looking online and some sites say no, others say yes, and a few say maybe I know u.s. is 120v and japan is 100v but do I actually need any kind of adapter? If I do, would you recommend any good ones?
Most modern devices that are portable (cellular phones, laptops, etc.) have universal (100-240v) power supplies and you’ll just need a plug adapter (most plugs in Japan are two-prong rather than three prong).
If you have devices like a cpap machine or other devices that aren’t strictly “portable”, these may run at slightly less power than they do in the US. If you have any sort of medical devices here, confirm with your doctor or the device manufacturer. Most other devices should be fine since it is still relatively close voltage.
The only problem I ever encounter in Japan that most power outlets don’t have 3 prongs. So just pack a 2 to 3 prongs adapter for any electronic that needs it.
nope
Look at your devices, if it say 100-240v as most chargers, will be fine. If 120v only for example many hair dryers, then it would not work exactly as intended, like motor run slower or it does not heat as much. Transformers are often heavy and expensive, so just avoid bringing stuff that is not rated for 100v would be the easiest way to go.
