This is the message that I get when I try to register my bank account with PayPay. My name and address is pulled digitally from my MyNumber card and verified by PayPay themselves. I cannot edit my name to remove the space between first and middle: the field is greyed out. The only thing I’m allowed to edit is the katakana, but that doesn’t seem to help.

What the fuck am I supposed to do?

  1. Unhelpful comment, but I gave up on Line Pay after trying every permutation of half-width, full-width, katakana, romaji, given names spaced, given names unspaced, etc. and could never get it to work.

  2. What you need to do is type it in manually, don’t scan it from your My Number card. Also, you should check your bank katakana name _again_ and make sure it’s exactly the same (check your bank’s login page for example). “My name is not in kana at my bank” it is, somewhere, just might not be surfaced in the UI. This is a bank spec thing. The katakana name is the “official name”.

    But also, email support. They will help you with this (I had similar issues).

  3. I’m in a similar situation, Paypay happily accepts my Romaji name and tried to link my account, but my bank (Resona) said no – it’s a different name. Both are Romaji though.

  4. I had the same problem. My bank account name is in full-width romaji but the PayPay app only allows katakana, so there is always a name mismatch when I submit the form. When the account registration fails you’re probably getting an error message with an error code. You should contact your bank about the problem and tell them the error code. If all else fails, contact PayPay about getting a paper form and handle it by post mail. Unfortunately, the online financial system in Japan arbitrarily discriminates against people with non-Japanese names.
