Itinerary Check – Hokkaido roadtrip

I’m planning a Hokkaido trip with my parents and sister (all adults). We’ve been to Japan before, but this will be the first time to Hokkaido. We’ll be going end of July/early August. The aim for this trip is:

\- Eat as much seafood as possible

\- Eat as much Hokkaido dairy products as possible

\- Spend 1 night in a ryokan

\- Do one hike with amazing scenery (parents can probably only do a half-day hike)

**Day 1: (Chitose Airport)**

Arrive morning. Allowing time getting luggage and getting hire car etc, hoping to leave airport around noonish? Or maybe get lunch at airport and then leave.

Plan is to drive to Lake Toya and enjoy the sights. Still doing research on activities here. Is Lake Shikotsu worth a stopover?

**Day 2: Lake Toya**

Perhaps a hike or checking out the scenery

**Day 3:**

Drive to Noboribetsu/Hell’s Valley. Check out the sights.

**Day 4:**

Drive to Furano. Check out Tomita lavender farm & Tomita melon farm

**Day 5:**

Explore the area. Maybe check out Shikisai No Oka. Any suggestions for nice scenery around the area?

**Day 6:**

Drive to Otaru. Hopefully arrive in time for lunch. Return the hire care and go to the music box museum. Will spend the afternoon wondering around. Perhaps Mt. Tengu Ropeway in the evening

**Day 7:**

Spend the day checking the sights of Otaru. Take train to Sapporo in the evening.

**Day 8:**

Explore Sapporo (Odori Park, Beer garden/museum, Nijo Ichiba fish market, eat as much seafood & dairy products as possible)

**Day 9:**

Other Sapporo sights. If nothing else interests us, maybe a day trip just outside the city.

**Day 10:**

Souvenir shopping at Chitose airport. Fly to Tokyo around noon. Afternoon/evening just wandering around, taking it easy.

**Day 11:**

Teamlab exhibit, other sights.

**Day 12:**

Shopping/help my mum stock up on supplies from Matsumoto/Daiso.

**Day 13:**

Fly home in the evening.

  1. Here are some spots I can recommend in Otaru and Sapporo. I’m glad you’re spending the night in Otaru. Most just do it as a day trip but we were so glad we stayed the night. Kinda wish we’d stayed 2 nights as there’s so much good food to try there.

    – [Cafe Bar and Apartment Stone and Iron](https://www.booking.com/Share-o221Sg)
    – We stayed 1 night here booking the entire apartment and loved it. Super cool old stone warehouse that’s been updated. Highly recommend but you will need to walk up a flight of stairs.
    – The farm to table restaurant here is very, very good too. In daytime it’s a cafe with excellent coffee but at night you can order a full dinner. We messaged on Booking after reserving the apartment to make a reservation for dinner the night of our stay.
    – [Naruto Main Shop: Best Chicken Ever!!!](https://maps.app.goo.gl/ytLHgK42k7Fx3pKQ7?g_st=ic)
    – [Otaru Tap Room](https://maps.app.goo.gl/xhweiPCAr7f4kATC6?g_st=ic)
    – [Have coffee/cake surrounded by glass lanterns. Try to go in a weekday if possible as it’s very popular and there will be long lines on the weekends.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/oxe1idPfGTr63EN38?g_st=ic)
    – [Otaru Blue Grotto Cruising: We didn’t have time to do this but if the weather is good could be fun.](https://httos://maps.app.goo.gl/QhH4xxpCXBZXRa7w7?g_st=ic)
    – [Otaru Stained Glass Museum](https://www.nitorihd.co.jp/otaru-art-base/en/stained-glass-museum/)

    In Sapporo we liked:

    – [Milk Mura: Ice Cream Bar where you drizzle flavored liqueurs over ice cream. Open late for dessert after dinner.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/XekmEyGaXRBo2TUZ6?g_st=ic)
    – [Ganso Ramen Yokocho (Alley)](https://maps.app.goo.gl/goEBUXv8zhMDWp9XA?g_st=ic)
    – [Suage+ for Soup Curry](https://maps.app.goo.gl/T7EtRgBTBnpDETZf7?g_st=ic)

If you want to do a day use onsen in Noboribetsu I liked [Dai-Ichi Takimotokan.](https://httos://maps.app.goo.gl/hjbWy8ufS3RPMCsw6?g_st=ic) It’s huge and you could spend a lot of time here. There’s an indoor swimming pool side too if you have swimsuits. Tattoos are not allowed.

    Happy Planning!

  2. Nothing wrong with the locations but I don’t understand you’re thinking of when you want to go to certain locations. You’re going down to Lake Toya and Noboribetsu first and then going all the way up to Furano/Biei to then just go back down to Otaru in Sapporo.
