Getting into a language school in Tokyo with a bad GPA

So both my brother and I went to Japan in November for the entire month and fell in love with it. We went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hyogo, Osaka, and Nara. After we both came home we applied for KCP International. Unfortunately they denied us because both my brother and I never saw college as a necessity and our grades in high school were very mediocre.

I guess my real question is this. Is there anyway to learn Japanese in Japan without a good GPA? I was using immersion learning and Anki for awhile but it’s not possible to get a year long visa just to “learn the language”. I want to start a career as an independent translator or something to do with translation. I don’t want to get a job as a teacher just to learn Japanese and want the focus of the time I spend in Japan to be learning the language.

Any help or advice would be really nice as I am stuck trying to figure out a job or school I could use to study abroad. I’m fully aware language is learned by experience and not in a classroom I just want to come over for an extended stay.

  1. It is possible to get a year long visa to learn the language. I’m doing that right now!
I’m on a 留学生(international student) visa studying at a lamguage school. I also didn’t go to college / had subpar grades in high-school.

    Good luck in your studies!

Full warning, there is no visa for freelancing— you’ll need to be employed by a company or have another type of visa like WHV.

  3. Have a look at the Pre-college Student Visa. I lived in Japan and attended a language school for two years on that.

Also language schools don’t care about your GPA. I hadn’t even gone to college. KCP International is university-affiliated, so they would have specific entrance requirements in line with that of the university.
