ELT Teachers’ Current Realities – what are your opinions? (Part 2)

\[Permission received from mods again–massive thanks!\]

Hi everyone, it’s me again 🙂 Thank you to everyone that participated in the questionnaire from my post last week, and thank you for all the helpful comments and feedback as well. I’m back with an edited version, and would be grateful for your help in completing this (I’m aiming for 40-50 respondents, currently have 4 😅). Just to reiterate, I’m a postgraduate student halfway through an MA in Education, and this research project I’m working on is looking into the challenges ESL/EFL teachers face when adapting materials for their lessons, and investigating what sort of support they need based on their experiences. This project consists of:

1. An online questionnaire about gaps that ESL/EFL teachers face between the ideal classroom and reality. This questionnaire will cover 8 themes, but should not take longer than 10-15 minutes.
2. An optional open-ended survey to find out what challenges these gaps between expectations and reality cause. As mentioned, it is optional but any feedback I am able to get would be immensely helpful. A link to this will be given at the end of the first online questionnaire.

The link to the information sheet explaining the project will be linked below and also in the online questionnaire. All data collected will be stored safely and kept strictly anonymous so that there will be no way to identify you or the institution that you work for. There is no obligation for you to participate in this research and should you wish to withdraw from the research at any point in time, you may do so and let me know.

There may be some of you on this subreddit who have submitted responses for my first questionnaire, I’ve spoken to my supervisor and should you wish to participate again, please go ahead.

Thank you again for your time and participation. Feel free to let me know if you have any comments or opinions about this.

  1. I’m not sure if I qualify as an ESL/EFL instructor, but maybe my work fits under that.

    Two thoughts:

    1. “authentic (relate to real-life situations)” seems like a bit of a dangerous phrasing to me as it can mean as you parenthetically describe *or* that materials are the same sort of materials as used by native speakers in similar contexts.
    2. “need to be motivated” can have the meaning of “need someone to force them to do”. I interpreted it to mean “need to feel motivated to”
