Hello! I am working on my itinerary and I have 1 days spare – I am thinking if staying either in Nikko or Kyoto. At this moment I am planning to spend 1 day in Nikko and 3.5 in Kyoto. Where would you rather extend your stay?
Also, do you know how does connection between Nikko and Takayama looks like?

It depends if going to Nikko fits easily in your schedule or not (from where you want to reach it and if it is a day trip). In my opinion 3 full days in Kyoto for the first time you discover the city is enough and you could use that extra 1 “credit” for somewhere else (like Himeji).
Strictly speaking, when I visited I thought Nikko was okay, not a let down like other touristic spots can be, but clearly not the highlight of my trip like other famous towns were (Nara for instance).
