I used one of those Smart Exchange machines in a convenience store recently. If you go to their website they have a QR code you can scan for a marginally better exchange rate. I was a bit apprehensive but there were no hidden extra fees so the rate was as displayed on the screen.

Japan isn’t like south east asia… Banks will generally have market rates without commission charges.
