Just realized JAL prohibits the use of Apple Airtag inside checked luggage

FYI, maybe some people already knew it, but I was under the impression after Lufthansa has backtracked their airtag ban, Airtags were allowed in checked bag in airline.

Apparently some airlines including JAL do still prohibit having Airtag in checked bag.

For JAL:

>Tracking devices (electronic devices that provide location information) with built-in lithium batteries or lithium-ion batteries

>Removed batteries may only be carried in carry-on baggage.

The CR2032 coin battery used in Airtag contains less than 2g of Lithium afaik, so battery safety may not be the reason here. But the requirement is you should remove the battery of the Airtag before putting it in a checked bag.

  1. What is the deal with wanting to put one in either way. It won‘t help you much getting lost baggage back if you do not plan to visit the location yourself. There are many stories of low to no cooperation apart from the normal processes.

  2. It‘s really not. And if it is prohibited you won‘t even have good use for it in a legal fight.

  3. Ooos. I just flew JAL with one in my luggage. No one said anything and it wasn’t searched or opened. Doesn’t seem like they can detect them.
