I have watched a lot of anime, and in my studies of Japanese I have as to yet to figure out why “Anata” can be used as either a disrespectful “YOU” or a term of endearment meaning “Darling” or something the the effect of “Sweetie” and so on. Could someone please explain the difference? Resource material has not listed anything comprehensive.
