Can anyone share a “moving out of Japan” to-do list?

We’re about 8 months away from moving out of Tokyo to my hometown in the US. There are so many things to take care of and we are listing them up ourselves, but wondered if we could reference something from someone whose done this before to make sure we’re not forgetting something.
We have kids and a cat but no property.
Thanks in advance!

  1. Pack now. Figure out what you are taking with you and what you are getting rid of. Then if what you are taking exceeds your carry on allowances, hire a household moving service to help with the move or pack and ship the products yourself.

  2. Start reducing your personal items now, whether that’s through selling items of value on Mercari, or dropping iff lower value items at a local second hand store. If you have someone in the US you can ship stuff to, begin shipping winter items or whatever you’d like to have there that you won’t be using in Japan much. Start thinking about things you’ll miss and what you might be able to purchase and ship ahead of time to get a head start. We had a lot of kitchen goods we shipped ahead of time from MUJI. Aside from that, just reduce, reduce, reduce and check off the last few things on your bucket list! For me, that would be cycling the Shimanami Kaido. Anyway, good luck!

  3. Holy crap, you plan 8 months ahead? I don’t even plan a week ahead and I’m on a 1 year visa in Japan
