So Japanese dermatologists do not remove moles?

So just finished with a Japanese dermatologist who told me I do have a few problematic moles that I should get checked out but he had no idea where I could go and do that.

Where do Japanese people usually get their moles checked for cancer and removed? What is the Japanese name of the place I should go to? I want to read reviews of local clinics and hospitals in the area that do it.

  1. Weird. I went to Garden Clinic Hiroo to get some large skin tags removed. It was an outpatient procedure, and the dermatologist sent them off to check them without issue.

I had a very good experience with them, and the dermatologist spoke perfect English (I believe she’s Korean), so maybe check there?

  2. I am sure they can do it. To me it seemed more like they have stricter guidelines of when. In the US it woud be like, “yeah that looks suspect lets remove it”. I went to a place in Azabu and it was like, “stay out of the sun”.

OTOH, Not sure about dermatology but I know with dentristy there are some more complex procedures that are only allowed to be performed at dental universities.

  3. They do. ほくろ除去・いぼ除去 should get you some results. Iirc, they’re not covered by insurance unless they’re related to cancer or something.

  4. Any large university hospitals in your area? Ask for a referral to one of those. If a small clinic can’t do the procedure necessary, they’ll refer you to a larger hospital that can. I got a mole removed that way after being referred from my usual little dermatologist clinic.

  5. For small moles just insist you want them removed. They’ll remove it or refer you to someone who can. Insurance might not cover it. Can always try saying that the mole is itchy or bothering you in some way if you want to roll the dice on insurance.

For larger moles or moles on/near your face, you want to go to a 美容皮膚科 or 皮膚科形成外科 if it’s particularly large/deep. Again, probably no insurance benefit.

If your dermatologist couldn’t even refer you, that’s a bit weird. Sounds like you need a better doctor. It’s a giant red flag when a doctor isn’t even connected enough in their community to refer you somewhere.

  6. I asked a classic dermatologist once, and he said he didn’t hve time to check everywhere :-O
I went to a plastic surgery dermatologist, and they removed it (costs more or less 1 man)
