Spending amounts for 3 weeks in Japan?

Hi everyone 😊

Me and my partner are planning a 3 week trip to Japan in April/May and we’re wondering how much spending money we’d roughly need?

Were planning on paying for hotels and trains before we go so it’s really only activities, food and local transport that we’d need to consider?

I have no idea how much we’d roughly need – we’re not really planning on booking any fancy restaurants or bars, we just want to have an authentic Japan experience 😃

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

  1. Anywhere between 3000JPY and 100000 (or more… there’s no real upper limit) per day per person. Under 3000 you’d need to be rather picky on what you spend.

  2. We were there in December, and spent approx ¥500 000 on shopping, public transportation within the cities, food, and activities.
    I would say about $120 000 – 150 000 went to shopping for clothing.

On average a train or bus ride will cost you ¥200-¥450 yen per person per ride.

A lot of attractions for shrines are free, temples and historical sites were about ¥600 per person.

The Osaka amazing pass is worth getting to save costs if you’re going to that city.

Most meals for us were about ¥6000 for dinner, with 2-3 alcoholic drinks

Breakfast at 7/11 seems cheap at first, but youre better off getting street food or eating at a real restaurant for the same price

We didn’t do any traditional shows, but we did see lots of people buying or renting traditional clothing and walking through Kyoto. Those outfits can cost anywhere from Â¥10 000 – Â¥100 000’s to buy I think.

We wanted to be able to do more shopping, so we wish we brought more money. Like a lot more.

I also suggest you plan your arrival to account for 4 hours to get to a train station from your arrival at the airport. So we wanted to go to Osaka right away from NRT. The flight staff didn’t allow people off the plane if they didn’t have a connecting international flight, those people were allowed to leave first only. That meant we sat there for almost an hour waiting for those people to leave, then it took us about 2 hours to get through customs, and another 45 mins to get our JR pass.

We didn’t plan for any of that, and the last JR train to Osaka left at 1900, but we were not ready until 20 00. So we had to buy tickets to Osaka through another company, which was an additional ¥15 000 per person. Really annoying, and a waste of money.

    Hope that helps.
