Question for orientalists. In some anime, manga or other works that refer to Japanese culture I met some characters, mostly female, that drawing a sword from theirs chests. Is there any cultural background of this or it’s just a popular trope based on nothing?

It’s a legit thing; you can even still see sumo’s tate-gyōji with such tantō on their persons.
