A veteran customer spoke to me in Japanese!

I was at my job working in a deli, and an old customer approached me. As I was taking his order my boss (who is also a veteran) talked to the man. Suddenly the veteran customer asked me if I spoke Japanese IN Japanese! He learned the language by serving in Okinawa. I quickly replied back to him in Japanese, and we had a full conversation in the language. Everyone was impressed, and a coworker commented how us speaking Japanese sounded very different to anime. I was very happy, considering how much racism I experienced in my childhood and youth since moving to PA. I plan to move to a Japanese American community where I can have moments like this daily.

  1. On the very rare occasions that I get to speak Japanese with customers, it’s always the highlight of my month.

I’m not native Japanese and hardly ever get to use the language since moving back to the states, so I know exactly how excited this man was to speak to you.

    You definitely made his day!
