Laundry service/washing machines after COVID?

Hi there,

Apologies if this is a silly question. I was reading some reviews on reddit by people just back from Japan about a month ago and they mentioned that laundry services at hotels had not really resumed after COVID.

Has this changed or is it quite easy to access washing machines in main cities?

I am travelling to Japan for the first time this summer and am hoping to travel light if I know I can wash my clothes every few days (this will make a huge difference to be able to travel light)

Thankyou!

EDIT: Would prefer to use the hotel laundry service but if not possible am super happy to pop to a launderette. More for saving time I would the hotel service but I will have some relaxing/down days so can easily use a launderette then.

  1. I don’t know about laundry services, but washing machines were available to me as always on my recent 6.5 week stay (with clothing for 8 days only). Both in business hotels and more typical hotels. I’ve also seen public laundrettes operating normally. Countryside and major cities alike. I don’t think I’ve seen a single laundry machine that wasn’t in service as usual.

  2. Sorry if this doesn’t match what you‘re looking for, but there‘s hotels that have a laundry machine in the actual hotel room itself, often the ones that also have a small kitchen space too. For example the Tokyu Stay chain.

  3. Laundry services are very common in Japan. If the hotel doesn’t offer this service, you can easily go to a coin laundry or laundry service business. They are very common and easily found throughout Japan so I don’t think you need to worry.

  4. I was just in Japan 12/22-1/3/23. At least 3 of my hotels were offering laundry service. The other two were onsen hotels I was only staying in 1 night in, so I honestly didn’t really check. I think the service is not quite as fast as it normally is going by something at one of my hotels,

One of my hotels had coin op laundry. It was hard to get a machine, the machine did a terrible job at drying my clothes (undies, masks, socks, shirts, leggings, no jeans.) I would probably just pay for a service next time because my time has a value too.

  5. You can always use a coin laundry. They’re plentiful anywhere but in business districts.
