Hellowork – Tokyo Site Experiences

So after 3 months of applying for literally everything I can find through LinkedIn, Gaijinpot, Indeed, etc I am at the point of max desperation for a job.

I’ve heard mixed things about hellowork, but am about ready to just go in and ask them to see if they can help. I was wondering if folks around here have had good experiences in specific Tokyo sites, since I can be flexible with where I go (I live in Meguro).

Priority being English support since my Japanese still sucks. I’m learning but I mean you don’t get to N2 overnight.

Also, if anyone in recruitment reads this: I ran a business for 7 years, but it was my own business – what’s up with successful self-employment coming off so badly in a resume? Should I just start lying?

  1. It’s my understanding that you’re supposed to go to hellowork as soon as you become unemployed? If you were paying any kind of employment insurance , you could be getting unemployment pay. But I’m not sure how it works if you were self employed. Also not sure of your visa details.

Anyway, don’t lie on a resume because the employer who decides to hire you will see your tax records, realize you lied, and rescind the offer.

  2. warehouse work, join a facebook group for your prefecture. they are always looking for extra hands

  3. I got a great job off ‘Jobsinjapan’. However, my experience with Hello work was positive. They found 3 jobs for me the first day I went, but the job from jobsinjapan called me back, so I didn’t need hellowork after that.

  4. “successful self-employment”

Did you have employees working for you or doing it all? You could choose to present different “sides” of your activity depending on where you apply?

  5. There’s not a lot of info for people correctly help you especially the career professionals on the site
    Maybe you can include
How long you been in Japan?
If you had your own business what industry are you thinking you can work in?
I had a Korean friend who couldn’t find work & Hello Work paid her unemployment while she did job training with them.

You can also try some of the tech outsourcing companies if you have any IT skills like Cognizant, Manpower or Epam systems, Fujitsu etc

  6. I signed up to Hello work after finishing JET and moved to Tokyo . Did my first submission of paperwork to them a month later, and although I did everything correct, received no money. I was told that because I had finished JET of my own accord (I finished my contract and decided not to recontract) rather than being sacked or losing my job due to covid, I was not eligible to receive anything for 3 months….I then got a short term job, and when I told them this, they said to come back the day after that contract finishes and sign on again. I didn’t bother-i was sure I would told that I would have to wait another 3 months.

  7. Hello Work is well intended but it generally gets bottom of the barrel job offers posted there.
