Gaijin’s should never complain about being treated differently

As a context I’m half-Japanese and grew up in the US and Japan.

In reference to the recent thread about mask wearing in Japan – I see an overwhelming response from foreigners claiming how they don’t care what the Japanese people think, they will do whatever they want because not wearing a mask is the rational choice – and if that is your opinion, great! Just please don’t complain about being discriminated against because you’re labeled as a “gaijin” because you are the reason why they think “gaijins” don’t respect Japanese customs or people. When you act as though your opinion bares more weight than others here it sends a pretty clear message that you are not here to care or be considerate – you’re probably just here to eat Japanese food, sleep with “easy” girls, party in residential area and make disturbances, buy anime goods and leave complaining about how irrational Japanese culture is. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I’m just asking you not to complain when you don’t make friends or people don’t treat you like a Japanese person at your work or elsewhere.

  1. Some foreigners are shitty so it’s ok to be xenophobia/racist towards them? Got it. That’s the same excuse people use to be racist or xenophobic against black people, or middle eastern people, etc.

And I’m a woman, who is married with a family and wears a mask before you claim I’m some otaku, playboy, anti masker

  2. Every country has its share of shitty people. Racism/xenophobia is excusing your own shitty people while generalizing another race for that same behavior.
Your opinion is not well-thought out and you would do well to consider the world with more empathy and understanding.

I have seen many, many people in Japan not wearing masks. Particularly men in their 20s and 50s+. Why is it that I never hear Japanese people complaining about their selfishness?

  3. You’ve gone from describing one example of being an asshat to being one yourself.

  4. You have a point and yet it’s hard to participate on what is obviously nothing else that theatre with extremely limited if not zero effectiveness against the issue it’s supposed to solve.

  5. So you are saying that because some people (a minority) wrote on Reddit about how they deliberately don’t fit in with the social norms, you think that all foreigners (most of them invisible at first glance) should not complain if they face discrimination?

And then you go on to list a whole lot of harmful stereotypes of both Japanese and foreigners…

That’s the exact way that people around the world justify racism. Small minority have bad behavior, therefore, racism against the entire group is ok…

I have a crazy Aunt who always posts the same thing about BLM and black people on her Facebook.

  6. What is worse is that these people come to Japan because its Japan and different from their home. Then when here they want to change things to be more like the shitty place they left. Why?

  7. I don’t see any xenophobia or racism in the point op was trying to make. Shitty people shouldnt whine is what I got out of it…

  8. It’s almost like coming into contact with other cultures can get someone to reevaluate their own culture. People should be able to share their ideas and beliefs without immediately being ostracized, which is what Japanese society does and why several of my Japanese friends want to move to America. Isn’t it silly that most Japanese people wear masks just to fit in instead of their convictions regarding public health? What is wrong with calling attention to that?

  9. >you’re probably just here to eat Japanese food, sleep with “easy” girls, party in residential area and make disturbances, buy anime goods

Hey now! I only did these things in the first 7 years here! I’ve changed!

  10. The only people I’ve heard complain about masks in real life (not here) are my Japanese friends. Nobody is under the illusion that wearing masks constantly outdoors is anything but a performance of compliance. And let’s not forget it’s not a 100% harmless performance. Those millions and millions of masks have to be manufacture and have to go somewhere after they’ve been used (perhaps just for one day). What do you think is the environmental impact of this performance??? Nothing to do with “Japanese custom”.

  11. I don’t mind being “labeled as a gaijin” cos that’s what I am.

And where did you get the idea that is gaijins “opinion bares more weight than others” ?

And I find this part to the post rather curious:

*”you’re probably just here to eat Japanese food, sleep with “easy” girls, party in residential area and make disturbances, buy anime goods and leave complaining about how irrational Japanese culture is.”*

I’m just your average armchair, unqualified speculative psychologist, but that paragraph right there gives me a large hint about what your real gripe is…hmmm.

I’m just a lowly gaijin trying to make a good living in your honorable, perfect land Mr Half Japanese/American-san.
Please pay me no mind…I will behave myself.
I bow down to your authority on etiquette and your vast wisdom about Gaijinology

  12. So according to OP, Japan has a national shared document that records foreigners who misbehave in Japan, so that locals can refer to when they decide whether or not they should discriminate against a particular foreigner. I mean how else would we punish the right foreigner?

Ah but for context, OP is half-Japanese, half-American!

  13. If you’d have stopped halfway through your post you’d have had a good point.

People want the best of both worlds, individual decisions and actions for me and community action and cohesion for thee. Can you blame them?

Of course that’s not “fair” and perhaps that is where your frustrations are coming from?

  14. Thanks for your dumb opinion OP. You’re just as bad as all the gaijin you speak of who don’t want to wear masks.

  15. I would agree with this stupid post, if it wasn’t for the fact that many japanese people don’t want to wear masks anymore as well, and another huge part of them are wearing it because they want to hide their face instead of protecting from COVID.

  16. You should definitely think twice about what you said in your post. Generalizing , making assumptions, and not understanding both your ‘gaijin’ and japanese society point of view once again.

  17. I’m going to follow the paths taken by Basho, Buson, Kikaku, and Shiki on their haiku journeys to try to capture some of the incredible beauty of their poetry and art for myself; and I’m not gonna wear a mask when I can avoid it. But don’t worry, I won’t be buying anime goods or making disturbances. I will drink all your sake, though.

  18. >you’re probably just here to eat Japanese food, sleep with “easy” girls, party in residential area and make disturbances, buy anime goods and leave complaining about how irrational Japanese culture

    Jesus Christ, who hurt you?!
