Genki vs Rocket Japanese

Good morning, I apologize if this has been asked before but I wanted to ask some experts lol. I started to learn Japanese recently and I am stuck between using the Genki textbooks I own or use Rocket Japanese. I know Genki is one of the best textbooks out there and that the workbook would be helpful but on the other hand the interactive audio courses from Rocket would help me with pronunciation. I appreciate any tips and help. Thank you

  1. Well to be honest Rocket languages is quite nice to have. It’s a all in one package with listen, speaking, writing, reading exercises. The explanations are kinda nice but I would still use some free resources as supplemental stuff.

The voice recognition on the speaking exercise are not as good as you might think. So I’d take these with a grain of salt. It’s beneficial when you speak or read out loud though.

Especially the grammar explanations are sometimes not the best. If anything I found it nice and not that repetitive in contrast to work with a book. I worked with Minna no Nihongo which has a unique style which I preferred over Genki and Japanese from Zero.

You can also refund it up until 60 days so if anything you get 2 months worth of a lot of material. I would suggest getting rocket languages when it’s on sale because the normal pricing is a bit too much. I mean $450 to get to JLPT N4 (for all three levels) is harsh. $260 is still a good amount of money though.

I’d give it a try. I think the first two or three lessons are free.
