Tokyo side trip – Hakone, Kamagura, Kawazu Sakura

Hello,

We (2 ppl) are planning to do visit tokyo for between 2/23-3/4. We are only planning to be in tokyo and wanted to do a side trip in the middle. I am going back and forth on how many nights we need to spend outside of tokyo mainly because I am not sure how much time is needed between hakone and kawazu sakura festival? I am thinking about these 2 ITN options:

Open to any suggestions!! thanks so much in advance for all of your help!

Option1:

1st day – day trip to Kamagura from Tokyo (Kotoku-in Temple then explore komachi dori), then end the day in a Hakone ryokan.

2nd day – explore Hakone (Ropeway and Cruise). end the day in the same Hakone ryokan.

3rd day – travel to kawazu for sakura festival. then return back to tokyo at the end of the day

Option2:

1st day – day trip to Kamagura from Tokyo (Kotoku-in Temple then explore komachi dori), then end the day in a Hakone ryokan.

2nd day – explore Hakone (Ropeway and Cruise). end the day in the same Hakone ryokan.

3rd day – explore Hakone in the morning (open air museum/gora koen) then travel to kawazu area and stay overnight.

4th day – Kawazu sakura festival . then return back to tokyo at the end of the day

  1. From my own experience, it’s nice to be in Kawazu from the early morning to enjoy the blossoms before the crowds arrive. That also leaves time for the waterfalls. And you could potentially add other spots around the Izu peninsula, it has some beautiful coastlines. I assume you take a rental car?

Btw you can just do Kamakura as a day trip from Tokyo, so it doesn’t have to be part of this side trip, I’d say.

  2. I’d suggest spending the night in an inn or ryokan on the Izu peninsula. It’s really gorgeous and then you’ll be able to check out a couple early Sakura spots there as the exact blooming time varies a bit based on the weather. Kamakura can really be it’s own stand alone day trip as it’s easiest to get there/back from central Tokyo anyways.
