Multi-Day Trek in Northern Japan

Hey all,

I currently live in Tokyo, and am planning my Golden Week itinerary. I would like to go on a multi-day hike, and wanted to see if people have some recs.

I did a trek in Kamikochi in the fall and have gone backpacking in Hokkaido, so ideally I’d like to see other areas. Some obvious options would be the Kumano Kodo or going to Dewasanzan , but does anyone have any recommendations for some springtime trekking in Northern Japan, maybe off the beaten path?

Thanks for any advice!

  1. If you have hiking gear for possible wintery conditions:

    * Mount Bandai + Azuma Mountains
    * Hachimantai

    Otherwise:

    * most of the trails in both Lake Towada and Lake Tazawa area should be open
    * Shimokita Peninsula might be an option, if you have car available (or are willing to rent one) and multiple one-day trips are an option

  2. I have not yet done it myself but you may also want to check out [Michinoku Coastal Trail](https://www.michinokutrail.com/)- the long walk trail in coastal Tohoku which was fairly recently opened. Benefiting from the JR pass now available to foreign residents – you can do some of the more scenic sections along this 1000km+ trail.

  3. Fyi haguro is about half a day and gassan to yudono is easily doable in a day. May not be the multi-day (unless you mean 2) hiking trip you’re looking for.

    Really enjoyed the hike, though.

    From Tokyo you’d basically be looking at 2 overnights (day 1 arrive/haguro, day to gassan to yudono, day 3 return).

  4. This was in winter around niseko hokkaido but my friends were claiming hiking all 7? Volcanoes around the area. Many day trips not a long trek though.

  5. We do biking camping trips rather than hiking but I can say the two caldera lakes are amazing. You can check our youtube channel by the name of waddo if you have time to kill because we have at least 3 Tohoku vids. Beware though that there can be snow at high elevation around Fukushima and also at sea level further up.
