  1. In the past six months, the Osaka Detention Centre (Miyakojima-ku, Osaka), where Tetsuya Yamagami, 42, a suspect in the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is being sent for assessment and detention on suspicion of murder, has received a steady stream of cash, clothes and other items, with registered cash receipts reaching over 1 million yen.

According to Yamagami’s uncle (77), a large quantity of clothes and sweets have been delivered to Yamagami through a service provided by a shop specialising in online deliveries to the detention centre. What the detention centre cannot hold is delivered to his uncle’s house.

Registered cash received so far amounts to more than 1 million yen. There was also a prepaid card that can be used at a major coffee chain. In some cases, letters have been delivered directly to the uncle’s house, with text to the effect of “Please support (Yamagami)” and “Tell him never to die”.

In addition, an ongoing petition on an internet signature website calling for a reduction in the amount of punishment for the Yamagami has already gathered more than 10,000 signatures.

In the comments section, there are a number of messages that regard Yamagami as a hero, such as “the man who protected Japan” and “he has brought down the gavel of justice”. Others expressed sympathy for the suspect’s upbringing, saying that “if I had been from the same background, I might have been the suspect” and “rather a victim”.

Professor Yasuyuki Deguchi (Criminal Psychology) of Tokyo Future University warns against this trend, saying that “it is a very dangerous way of thinking to rationalise that crime is inevitable as long as the reason is valid”.
