Applying for NHI for spouse

Hello. I’m an expat and my spouse joined me later in Japan. I would be covered by NHI sponsored by my company for myself. But for my spouse, would it be a different way to apply for NHI?
Do I need to consult my ward office 区役所?

Spouse is non-working individual on dependent VISA with Residence card.

Thank you in advance

  1. Because you’re enrolled in Shakai Hoken with your employer the. Assuming your spouse is a “dependent spouse”* I.e earning <¥1.3 million per year then you speak to your employer.

Then your dependent spouse’s will be a “category 3 insured person” as in their health insurance and national pension will paid for by your employer. So they have no need to enroll in and pay NHI and national pension.

*this is mostly for other readers as you mentioned your spouse is “non-working” so this won’t apply to you OP, but on a dependent visa your spouse *should* be a “dependent spouse” earning less than ¥1.3 million a year because that is literally the definition of the status of residency…. Dependent. There is no official limit to what a dependent visa holder can earn but the ¥1.3 million dependent spouse threshold is recommended guideline figure not to exceed. Also your dependent visa holder spouse can only work a maximum of 28 hours per week, and they have to apply for permission from immigration to do that first. Also because this often comes up a lot… if your dependent spouse is working remotely for an overseas company then that income is Japan sourced income. It’s not “foreign sourced income”
