Online teaching

Hi not sure if this is the right place to post this. I’m looking for recommended online companies to teach English to Japanese students, hopefully whilst still living in UK. Thanks

  1. Unfortunately the pay for online tutoring/teaching in Japan is terrible when you compare it to other countries. Also this month China banned all online teaching so that shook the industry pretty hard as a whole causing many teachers to scramble for what they could get. Best bet is to look into what’s available for southeast Asian countries like Vietnam. The going rate is usually around 20$ US an hour.

  2. You’re competing with online teachers in countries like the Philippines with much lower cost of living, thus the low wage.

  3. Check out Skimatalk. You set your own rate and teach adults. I did it for a year and made like $8 USD/25 min class. It’s all through Skype (or at least was last year). The hard thing is you have to be willing to accept the slow start. Students find your profile and book your lessons.

I set my schedule fully open, so students could almost always book my lessons. I only got like one or two lessons a week, but things started to pick up. After 4 months, I could bank on having about 4 lessons a day.

So, I really don’t recommend it for a full-time gig… but if you’re okay with teaching like a lesson or 2 a day, it’s perfect.
