Point cards

Worth it? Should I look into signing up for these point cards that every establishment seems to have? Am I missing anything if I’m not using points cards?

  1. I only bother with the ones that are digital, or I’ll suffer the crappy paper ones if I go there once or twice a week. Otherwise you need a bag to carry them in.

  2. They’re worthwhile for places you regularly shop at. The points are as good as money once you accumulate enough of them.

  3. Point cards are really just a way for these companies to track where you spend your money. So my policy is only to sign up for ones where I do a lot of shopping so the benefits are actually worth it. So I got one for the supermarket. I gave up on T-Points because I didn’t feel like putting in the hours to find actual benefit. If you’re not using a commuter pass on your repeated JR East trips, signing up for their JRE program gives you money back that you could’ve gotten off of the free 11th ticket when you bought ten before.

  4. Take a look at the grocery stores and convenience stores that you usually visit, and if you can cover them by getting one or two cards on your phone, it might be worth it.

I don’t particularly like the point card system in general, but as long as it’s all on your phone then it doesn’t take much work. And it saves you a little bit of money.

  5. I got a rakuten credit card and pay for everything with the card.
Points do add up and with some of the sign up bonuses I’ve gotten more than 10.000¥ in points already.

  6. I used to not care. But if you see things from another perspective, wouldn’t you care if your salary was up or down by a couple percent? That’s basically what these things do if you use them systematically.
