Advice on SHINJUKU JAPANESE LANGUAGE INSTITUTE

Hello my girlfriend and I are going to be traveling to Japan for 3 months and are leaving in September 2023. We have zero knowledge of Japanese and are looking at the basic beginner course at the mentioned school. It’s an online class that’s once a week for 3 hours every session. And there are 10 sessions. For each of us it’s $400. Is this worth it? We’ve been seeing to self teach but I can’t imagine how difficult it may be to adequately teach yourself and continue to learn at a good pace and teach yourself the correct things so we considered this. Thanks for the help.
Also we’ve heard of iTalki and neither of us are really comfortable to do that.

We are taking only the Beginner 1 class for clarification.

  1. For an absolute beginner, I would recommend something like Duolingo. All the basics are present in the introductory lessons. Self paced of course but if you do something every day you will have the basics. Imo.

  2. Look up the genki textbook it’s very beginner friendly. If you don’t want to buy the book there should be a free pdf somewhere. But I would highly recommend getting the books.
