I’m an American girl and going out with a girl whos Japanese; Tips on how dating differs from what I’m used to or what I should keep in mind?

  1. First of all, you’re dating this girl, not any Japanese girl, so general guidelines about Japanese culture will not always apply as I have friends that break all the stereotypes or generalisations.

    However, the most important thing is to establish close connections and open communication. Lack of communication is the biggest problem in all the Japanese-non-Japanese couples I know, with people finding out serious surprises years into dating that needed to be discussed much, much earlier. So, I would say the biggest risk is a surprise breakup because something was going wrong that you didn’t know about, or a surprise problem in some other way.

    So, work on that, make sure that she can talk to you about anything, pay attention to subtle cues that things might not be right. Encourage openness yourself by being open with your feelings too.

    There’s quite a few other things I could put here, but this is the big one.
