COE from language school?

Hello everyone,

Thanks for reading my post! I am set to graduate with my bachelors in a year and am looking to go to Japanese language school for 2024.

I am Japanese American, not eligible for Japanese citizenship due to not being on the koseki. However, I am eligible for the child of Japanese national visa as well as the Long Term Resident visa.
I spoke with my regional Japanese embassy and they told me all I need is a COE and I can then apply for a visa.
However, I am confused if this means I can apply for the LTR or the child of Japanese national visa or they just meant the student visa? I didn’t want to pester them any more but was curious if anyone here has experience in this type of situation.

Thank you very much and happy new year!

TLDR: Japanese American, soon to graduate, and am looking to go to Japanese language school. However, I am also considering applying for JET or Interac. Would the language school’s or ALT companies COE allow me to use it for the LTR or child of Japanese national visa?

  1. Immigration Services of Japan has a website with information about how to apply for both of these visas. Neither will involve language schools, ALT companies or anything like that – it will be a COE that either you apply for yourself, or that the embassy decides you don’t need (see their website for more details).
